Caring for Your Handmade Pottery

We hope you use and love these pieces for years to come! Each one is made to be sturdy and durable, but a little extra care will help it last even longer — so here are a few essential tips for cleaning and caring for your pottery.

All of our pottery is lead-free and food safe, and it's fine to put in the microwave and dishwasher. It is not oven safe — with one exception: the pie pan can go in the oven, as long as it's placed in before preheating.

You may have heard that some stoneware is porous enough to soak up water. Ours is fired at a high enough temperature that this isn't a concern.

That said, handmade pieces can still crack or react if they're not treated gently. A few things to keep in mind:

  • In the dishwasher: if pottery knocks against something, it can chip — and a chip can eventually turn into a crack. Give your pieces a firm, secure spot so they can't rattle around, and try to keep them from touching each other or other breakables.

  • In the microwave: watch your proportions. Heating a small amount of food on a large plate can heat unevenly, creating hot spots that stress the piece over time.

  • With temperature swings: do not send your pottery from one extreme straight to the other — like going from fridge/freezer to microwave. Sudden temperature changes are what cause cracking, not heat or cold on their own. (Pouring hot coffee into a mug from the cupboard? Totally fine — no worries there.)

If you ever have questions or concerns about your piece, please don't hesitate to reach out. We're always happy to help!
